My family migrated from East Bengal during the Partition in 1947. We received land from the government then, and our current house stands on it. The land wasn’t bought, it was given to my grandmother. My two uncles were working then, so their names were not included in the deed. Only my grandmother, aunt, one uncle, and my father are mentioned. These relatives never lived in the house or paid any taxes on it. My family bought a flat four years ago, and it was supposed to be ready more than two years ago according to the agreement. The penalty for the delay seems to be just on paper. Recently, we received a letter asking us to finish some work in the flat. We’ve been to the construction site three times, but each time, we’re told we can’t see the flat for one reason or another.
