My husband has filed for divorce in the family court, and I’m not ready to give up on our marriage. My lawyer suggests trying mediation. How long can mediation last? What happens if we can’t reach an agreement? Will the divorce be granted automatically if mediation fails? I understand that since I don’t want a divorce, it shouldn’t be granted just because mediation fails. We should still be able to go to court to resolve the matter.

I’m going through a difficult separation. I left my husband’s home in Hyderabad five months ago but waited to get my money back first. We bought a house together, and he took around 15 lakhs from me. My wife and I got married in 2004 under the Special Marriage Act, keeping it a secret from both our families. We lived separately until 2007, when we had a small ceremony and she moved in with my parents. Her family didn’t attend and basically disowned her.
