I’ve been living with my family in Mumbai for 25 years, in my brother’s rented property under the “pagdi” system. While I don’t pay him directly, I cover the rent and electricity bills. My brother has been living in his own flat for 12 years. Unfortunately, there have been constant arguments and disagreements with family members, leading to my brother issuing a notice yesterday, demanding I vacate the property in 60 days. I have nowhere else to go. The rent receipts are in my brother’s name but I have them. What legal options do I have to prevent eviction? Could easement laws help? I want to ensure that the landlord doesn’t benefit from this situation.
