We got married in our hometown in Uttarakhand, both of us from the same city. We spent about two weeks there before moving to Nagpur. We visited our home twice in the first year and a half of our marriage. However, none of my family members came to visit us in Nagpur. In October 2014, my wife filed a police complaint against my entire family under Section 498A. The case was filed in court in June 2015. She also filed a separate criminal complaint against my family and my uncle in a Nagpur court in February 2015. The court has ordered an investigation into this private complaint. My sister was tragically killed in October 2008 for dowry by her in-laws. The Sessions court sentenced her husband and mother-in-law to 10 years in prison in 2010. But within six months, the High Court granted bail to her mother-in-law and a year later, her husband’s sentence was suspended. Now, despite filing our appeal for life imprisonment five years ago, the hearing hasn’t even started. Our lawyer, a junior advocate, advises waiting another 2-3 years before the hearing begins.
