I’m from Rajasthan and have been working in Dubai as a business consultant for the past 5 years. My husband and I got married in a temple in Mount Abu in February 2016, but we didn’t tell our families. We only have pictures of our wedding, taken outside the temple, showing me wearing sindoor and mangalsutra. Now, my husband is refusing to acknowledge our marriage. He grew up in the UAE, but is currently living in a village in Gujarat with his grandparents. His family is struggling financially in the UAE and doesn’t own any property in India. I informed my family about the marriage in 2016, and recently told his family, but they won’t accept me. I’m heartbroken and want to save our relationship. What can I do?

Four years ago, I married with my parents’ blessings. We have two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. Sadly, my husband’s behavior changed after our second child was born. He began to mistreat me, and my mother-in-law constantly creates problems between us. This abuse has happened repeatedly, not just once or twice. On a Friday night in August, around 11:30 pm, I was forced to leave and return to my mother’s home after my husband physically assaulted me and even broke my mangalsutra. My tenant left my house in April 2016, leaving two post-dated cheques – one for ₹10,000 and another for a larger amount. The cheques were dated May 25th.
