My wife and I are going through a divorce in India. Both families agreed to the separation, and my family returned her jewellery, paid 4 lakhs in cash, and promised to pay another 4.5 lakhs upon finalization. This is all documented in a police agreement. However, my family needs a power of attorney stamped by the High Commission of India to proceed with the divorce. Due to misinformation, we sent two unstamped powers of attorney, which were rejected, wasting several weeks. I’m now preparing a correctly stamped document, which will take about a month. My in-laws are threatening my family, claiming they have influence with the Punjab police, politicians, and lawyers. They’re pressuring my family to expedite the divorce, threatening to break the agreement, withhold the money, and even file false cases against me. I’m deeply distressed and my family is in danger. My visa is expiring soon, so I can’t travel to India. We’re working on the documents as quickly as possible, but they’re unrelenting. What legal options can I pursue to protect myself and my family?

My ex-wife and I are both Indian citizens. I’ve lived in the UK since 2010, and she joined me here in 2013 after we married in India in 2012. I filed for divorce in a UK court in 2014, and we’re awaiting their decision. I’m wondering, can she go back to India and file for divorce there while our case is ongoing in the UK?
