I’m trying to update the name on my Tata Power electricity bill after my father passed away. We rent the house on a “pagdi” basis. When I visited the Tata Power office, they asked for a lot of documents, including my father’s death certificate, my own ID for verification, and even an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the landlord. The landlord has been saying he’s out of Mumbai for the past three weeks and to call back later. Is there another way I can get the name changed on the bill?

Under Indian law, Tata Power can reasonably request a death certificate and your identification for the name change. However, they may not be legally entitled to demand an NOC from your landlord for a name change on the electricity bill, especially if the rental agreement is in your father’s name. You can try explaining this to the Tata Power office and see if they’ll accept your father’s death certificate and your own ID as sufficient proof.
