My mother passed away unexpectedly without leaving a will. Now, my stepfather and stepbrother claim I have no right to her property. My mother founded a successful school with many divisions, and owned several flats and properties. My stepfather has become the chairman, and my stepbrother the secretary and treasurer. They only send me 15k rupees monthly, the same amount my mother used to give for my rent, calling it a favor. They say I have no claim, but it’s their mercy to give it. My stepbrother is not my mother’s biological son; only the younger one is.

In India, when a person dies without a will (intestate), their property is distributed according to the Hindu Succession Act. You, being your mother’s biological child, are a legal heir and have a right to inherit her property. Your stepfather and stepbrother cannot claim sole ownership, and their actions may be illegal. You should consult a lawyer to understand your rights and pursue legal action if necessary.
