My husband passed away unexpectedly. We didn’t have a will. How will his property be divided between me and his mother? He had taken a loan on a property and I was the nominee. Will I inherit the property outright, or will his mother have a claim on it?

In the absence of a will, your husband’s property will be divided according to the Hindu Succession Act. His mother will inherit a share, and you, as his wife, will inherit the remaining share. The fact that you are the nominee on the loan does not automatically transfer ownership to you; it merely makes you the rightful receiver of the loan proceeds, and his mother still retains her legal inheritance rights.
