My father passed away six to seven months ago. I’m the nominee on most of his bank accounts, but my sisters have the bank documents. We’re not sure if he left a will as his locker hasn’t been opened yet. Should I claim the entire amount as the nominee or should we reach an agreement with my sisters? If I claim the amount, could they challenge it later? The total amount is approximately 60 lakhs. What’s the best way to proceed?

As the nominee, you have a strong claim to the bank accounts, but your sisters could challenge it based on inheritance laws. It’s advisable to reach an agreement with your sisters regarding the distribution of the funds, ideally through a legal consultation and formal documentation, to avoid future disputes. Opening the locker and finding a will would also significantly impact the situation.
