My father passed away in 2010 after a road accident. He left behind a house he bought in 2008 with his own hard-earned money. Now, my uncle (my father’s brother) is claiming a share in the house, saying my father gave him half as a thank you for helping him with a problem. However, he has no proof. Can he legally claim a share in the house under Hindu law?

Under Hindu law, a gift of immovable property needs to be in writing and registered. As your uncle has no proof of the gift, his claim is not legally valid. The house would be considered part of your father’s estate and would be distributed according to the rules of intestate succession.
