Good evening. My grandmother passed away on March 2nd, 2016. We didn’t apply for a death certificate then, and my father is the nominee on her PNB bank account. However, my aunt has written to the bank, claiming my father shouldn’t receive any money. She also threatens legal action. How can we prevent this from happening?

Under Indian law, a nominee is entitled to the funds in a bank account upon the account holder’s death. Your father, being the nominee, has a legal claim to the funds. You should immediately apply for a death certificate and provide it to the bank to support your father’s claim. You can also seek legal advice to counter your aunt’s claim and protect your father’s rights.
