My shop in Perambur, Chennai, is about 200 square feet. I paid a hefty advance of 7 lakhs and the monthly rent is 25,000 rupees. I also spent 2 lakhs on interior work. Unfortunately, business is slow and I’m struggling to keep up with such a high rent. I’ve noticed neighboring shops have lower rent. Any advice on how I can negotiate with my landlord?

Under Indian law, you can try negotiating a lower rent with your landlord. Emphasize the slow business and the disparity in rent compared to neighboring shops. You could propose a temporary rent reduction, a revised lease agreement, or even a partial rent waiver. However, your landlord is not legally obligated to agree to your requests.
