My wife, the eldest of three siblings, has been facing a difficult situation. Her father, a wealthy businessman, harbors suspicions about her parentage and has refused to provide for her education or well-being. He has subjected her to abuse, including physical violence and inadequate nourishment. Though he never divorced her mother, he has essentially abandoned his daughter, leaving her education and wedding expenses to her maternal uncle. Can her father be held accountable for his actions under Indian law?

Yes, your wife’s father can be held accountable for neglecting his parental duties under Indian law. The Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, address domestic abuse, including physical violence and emotional distress. Moreover, he can be legally compelled to provide for her education and well-being, even though he is not divorced from her mother.
