My husband and I have been married for 14 years. After our wedding, I supported his education. Now, he wants to leave me for his ex-girlfriend who is divorced. He constantly belittles me with words, actions, and even his looks. Every day, I think about ending my life. He treats me like I am nothing, even avoiding physical contact. This has been going on for the past three years, and I feel utterly hopeless. We were married under the Special Marriage Act of 1872. Is there any way I can legally prevent him from leaving me? I desperately want to stay with him. Please guide me.

Under Indian law, you cannot legally prevent your husband from leaving you, even if you supported his education. However, you can seek legal recourse for the emotional abuse you’re enduring. You can file for divorce under the Special Marriage Act, citing cruelty as grounds, and seek alimony and maintenance. Additionally, you should seek support from family, friends, or a therapist to address your feelings of hopelessness.
