Our society was registered three years ago with a committee of seven members. We later added six more members, but were unaware of the legal process for changing the committee. A broker helped us with the paperwork, and all twelve committee members signed the required documents. Six members were present and signed, but the broker also had us sign on behalf of the absent members. Since we were unfamiliar with the process, we signed documents (including ID proof) for those who weren’t there. Now we want to legally change the committee and ensure everything is in order to avoid any future issues. Currently, all members are supportive and willing to sign any necessary affidavits. How can we proceed to make this change legally sound?

To rectify the situation, you need to formally amend your society’s by-laws by following the prescribed procedure under the relevant state’s Societies Registration Act. This includes holding a properly convened general meeting with quorum, where all members vote to approve the changes. You should consult a lawyer to ensure compliance with the Act and legal validity of the new committee.
