My husband lives abroad and wants to get a divorce. He’s sent a document giving his father the power to act on his behalf. Can his father represent him in a divorce case here in India? Should he have sent a special power of attorney or a general power of attorney instead?

Under Indian law, a Power of Attorney (POA) is required for someone to represent another in legal matters. A general POA is insufficient for divorce proceedings. Your husband should have sent a Special Power of Attorney (SPA) specifically authorizing his father to represent him in the divorce case.
