My husband and I have been living separately for almost a year now, things haven’t worked out between us. I’m still unsure about divorce but I need to get my belongings back – my car worth around 7 lakhs, gold jewellery weighing about 200 grams, and some silver items. My husband and his family refuse to return them, claiming I took everything when I left. This isn’t true. Could I file a dowry and harassment case to get my things back first, and then decide about divorce later? What would you suggest?

You can file a complaint with the police or a civil suit for recovery of your belongings, stating the true facts. Filing a dowry harassment case solely to retrieve your belongings might not be legally advisable. Seeking legal counsel from a lawyer is recommended to understand your options and proceed with the right course of action.
