My friend, a young woman, recently got married in a Hindu ceremony. Though she agreed to the marriage, it was under pressure from her family. She was actually in love with someone else. Now, she’s struggling to adjust to her new life and her husband is upset because of her past relationship. He’s even refusing to consider a divorce and is making it difficult for her. He’s even saying she needs to replace herself with another woman if she wants a divorce. Her parents are caught in the middle, not knowing what to advise. What would you suggest they do?

Your friend should seek legal counsel. In India, a marriage under duress can be annulled, and her husband’s actions may constitute cruelty, which can be grounds for divorce. Her parents should support her in seeking legal advice and taking steps to protect her well-being.
