My wife, a Hindu Bengali, needs to stop transactions on various accounts held with banks and the post office in her father’s name. He recently passed away, and she doesn’t know the account numbers. Can she inform the banks and post office about this and request a halt to transactions? Will they be obliged to accept her application? How can she find out the account numbers and get duplicate passbooks, deposit certificates, and other documents from these institutions?
