My grandfather gave a 3-portion home to my father and his brother in the 1950s, without registering it formally. My father, the younger brother, used to pay rent on his share and has since moved to Hyderabad. Now, we want to sell our portion of the house, but we don’t have any documents or registration papers. My grandfather had verbally declared that two portions belong to my elder brother and the remaining two to my father. What steps should we take to legally sell our portion of the house?

Since the property was not formally registered, you will need to establish ownership through legal means. This can be done by filing a suit for declaration of title and possession in a court of law. You will need to provide evidence like witness statements and rent receipts to prove your father’s ownership, and then the court can issue a legal title that allows you to sell your portion.
