My father purchased a plot of land, around 150 square yards, nine years ago. We paid the price in three installments, with the agreement that the original documents would be handed over after the final payment. However, after the last installment, the seller claimed the documents were lost. He continued this for a few months and then vanished to a different city, ignoring our calls. We later discovered that the land was originally allotted by the state government to a government employee, who then sold it to the person we bought from. This government employee still holds the original documents and recently sold the land again, making a General Power of Attorney (GPA) for the new buyer. We only have a signed document from the government employee and his wife. How can we legally claim ownership of the land, considering the seller has disappeared and the land was sold twice?

You have a strong claim to ownership as you paid the full price and have a signed agreement with the original seller. You can file a case in court seeking possession of the land based on your agreement, the original seller’s fraud, and the illegal sale by the government employee. You can also pursue legal action against the government employee for selling the land without proper authorization.
