In India, property inheritance is governed by the Hindu Succession Act, 1956. As the eldest daughter, you are entitled to an equal share of your father’s property along with your brothers and sisters. This means the property will be divided equally among all five children.

I purchased a plot in 1997 through a General Power of Attorney (GPA) from a Mumbai-based realtor. The GPA was registered in Hyderabad under the Indian Stamp Act 1899. My friend’s father passed away 24 years ago, leaving behind two types of property: ancestral land and his own property. His wife and their four daughters are the legal heirs. His wife wants to transfer her late husband’s property to their youngest daughter. However, the third daughter sent a notice objecting to this. Do all four daughters have a claim to their father’s property, or can their mother transfer it solely to the youngest? Our apartment building has nine flats – three on the ground floor, four on the first floor, and two on the second. The builder’s plans show only four covered car parking spaces, which were included in the agreement. He promised to allocate parking on a first-come, first-served basis after registration, as there are fewer parking spaces than flats.
