I recently bought a flat in a housing society in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. The society charged me ₹25,000 for transfer fees and ₹24,750 as a donation for transferring the shares in my name. I paid both amounts by cheque. However, the receipt was issued in the seller’s name. Can I get a refund of the donation amount? What steps should I take?

Based on Indian law, the society cannot charge a “donation” for transferring shares. You can seek a refund of the ₹24,750 paid as a donation. You should write to the society secretary demanding a refund and citing the illegality of the charge. If they refuse, you can approach the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) for redressal.
