We rented a 2 BHK flat in May 2016 without a written agreement, only a verbal one. We told the landlord we’d likely stay for two years. Six months later, he wants us to leave because he’s facing losses and wants to sell the flat. We asked for a 3-month extension because our new house is under construction and will be ready in January 2017. He’s refusing and wants us out in a month. Is he right to do this, and do we have any legal rights?

Under Indian law, a verbal rental agreement is valid. While your landlord can seek to sell the property, he cannot force you out immediately. You have the right to reasonable notice, which is typically determined by the tenancy period (in your case, two years) or local laws. A court might order a reasonable extension, especially given your situation.
