My landlord and I renewed our lease for my rented house in February 2015, initially for 11 months. We then renewed again in January 2016, extending it to December 2016. I’ve informed him I’m planning to move to my sister’s place in July 2016, but he’s refusing and saying I need to stay until the lease ends in December or pay the full rent. He also insists I find him a replacement tenant before leaving. The original agreement doesn’t mention these specific conditions, and he’s saying it’s not necessary. What should I do?

Based on Indian law, your landlord cannot force you to stay until December or find a replacement tenant. While a lease agreement should be honored, it’s your right to vacate the property upon giving proper notice, which is typically 30 days. You can politely reiterate your intention to leave in July and remind him of your legal right to do so. If he continues to refuse, you can seek legal advice.
