I rented a house in India under a Leave and License agreement. I moved out on September 30th, leaving some belongings behind with the owner’s agreement. We decided to clean the house before I collected my things. However, the owner is now withholding ₹6,000 from my ₹40,000 security deposit and demanding I paint the house and get pest control. This is happening after 45 days since the agreement ended, and he was supposed to return the balance by November 15th as per our agreement. We even had a WhatsApp chat confirming we mutually agreed to keep my belongings there for a while. What are my legal options in this situation?

You can legally challenge the owner’s deductions for painting and pest control as these were not part of your original agreement. You can also pursue the return of your security deposit as the owner has breached the agreed upon timeline. The WhatsApp chat serves as evidence of your mutual agreement, strengthening your case.
