I paid a Rs 12,000 advance to a landlord for a house I planned to rent, but now I can’t move in due to personal reasons. I informed him, but he’s refusing to return the money. We didn’t sign any agreement, but I have a receipt from the real estate agent. It doesn’t say the advance is non-refundable. Can I do anything legally to get my money back?

You can legally pursue the return of your advance payment. Since there is no written agreement stating it’s non-refundable and you have a receipt from the agent, you have grounds to file a civil suit for recovery of the amount. The receipt serves as evidence of the transaction and your right to the money.
