I moved out of my rented house and gave the keys back to the owner and broker. They were late to collect the deposit, so I left the keys and vacated the property. Unfortunately, one of the movers left a tap running, causing flooding in the house and damage to the unit below. Now the owner is claiming we’re responsible for the entire cost of repairs. Is there any way to resolve this situation fairly?

Under Indian law, you may be partially liable for the damage caused by your mover’s negligence, even though you vacated the property. However, you can argue that the landlord’s delay in collecting the deposit and the keys contributed to the situation. You can negotiate a fair settlement, possibly dividing the repair costs based on your contribution to the damage. It’s advisable to consult with a lawyer to assess your legal standing and negotiate effectively.
