I’m an Assistant Executive Engineer in the Border Roads Organisation, appointed through the UPSC Engineering Services exam in January 2015. I was on a two-year probation period when I sustained a spinal injury while on duty in October of the same year. After taking an initial three months of leave for treatment, I applied for an eight-month extension with a medical certificate from a government orthopaedic specialist. However, instead of granting the extension, I received a termination notice. What are my rights and options in this situation?

You have grounds to challenge the termination. The government’s termination decision seems unfair and likely violates the provisions of the Civil Services (Probation) Rules, 1958. You should consult a lawyer and consider filing a writ petition in the High Court, challenging the termination and seeking reinstatement and compensation for wrongful termination.
