We had an Arya Samaj wedding, but then agreed to follow our parents’ wishes and returned home. Now, my wife says she can’t come back with me without her parents’ permission. They won’t allow us to talk privately and are even saying she wants a divorce. Is there any way to get a divorce without a strong reason if I want to stay with her? Could they file a case against my parents since she hasn’t visited my home even once after the wedding?

Under Indian law, a divorce can be granted based on mutual consent, regardless of reasons. However, your wife’s parents’ interference does not constitute grounds for a divorce. Your wife’s refusal to return with you without her parents’ permission is a separate issue and might require legal intervention. There is no legal basis for your parents to be held liable as your wife has not visited your home.
