My name is Somya, and I’m a Hindu. I’ve been in a relationship with a Muslim man, and we’ve had both a legal marriage and a Nikah ceremony. My parents know about our marriage, but they are not accepting it. My partner’s family, however, is supportive. We want to start our life together, but my parents’ disapproval is a big hurdle. What should we do?

In India, a valid marriage under Hindu law is recognized, even if a Nikah ceremony was also performed. Your parents’ disapproval doesn’t affect the legality of your marriage, but their acceptance is a personal matter. Consider counseling with a family therapist to bridge the gap between your family and your partner.
