My mother, a cancer survivor, is 72 years old and I’m a 35-year-old unmarried woman. We live together and depend on her pension and some investments to manage our daily expenses. My father has passed away and my brother, who’s in the merchant navy, is often out of town. His family lives on the third floor while we’re on the ground floor of my mother’s property. Unfortunately, my brother’s wife and her mother constantly pick fights with us over trivial matters, even though we don’t interfere in their lives. I’m worried about recent incidents and concerned they might falsely accuse us and take legal action. Could you please offer some guidance to protect us from such a situation?

In India, your mother owns the property and you have a right to reside there, even without a legal document. However, constant harassment can be addressed legally under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. You can file a complaint with the police or approach the local court for protection and prevent any false accusations.
