My family rents a house for 8 thousand rupees a month. My father, a pensioner who receives 18.5k monthly, agreed to pay the rent to the landlord. For the past year, the rent hasn’t been paid, and the owner just found out. He wants the entire amount in one go. My brother recently got a job, but I’m unemployed and my mother is a homemaker. We own a 2.5-acre plot of land worth roughly 1 lakh rupees. If the landlord takes legal action to recover the rent, will I be held responsible for paying it, as I also lived in the house with my father?

Under Indian law, you are not automatically liable for the rent simply because you lived in the house. As your father agreed to pay the rent, he is primarily responsible. However, the landlord could potentially argue that you are jointly liable if you contributed to the household expenses or benefitted from the tenancy. The final decision would depend on the specific facts of the case and the court’s interpretation of the law.
