My family is Muslim, and I’m 26. I’ve fallen in love with a Hindu girl, also 26, and we want to get married. However, her parents are against it because of our different religions. We’ve decided to go ahead with a Special Marriage Act 1954 registration. If her parents object during the notice period because of our religions, can our marriage be cancelled? If so, what steps should we take?

Under the Special Marriage Act, her parents’ objections based solely on religion are not grounds for cancellation. However, if they raise valid objections regarding the couple’s age, mental capacity, or existing marriages, the marriage registrar can investigate and potentially delay the registration. If the objections are deemed frivolous, the marriage will proceed after the notice period.
