My daughter got married two years ago. Sadly, after just three months, her in-laws started harassing her, pressuring her husband to mistreat her. Her husband has also become a heavy drinker and is abusive. We brought our daughter back home a year and a half ago. Now, her husband and in-laws are demanding she return. We fear the same abuse will happen again. What legal options do we have to protect her from domestic violence if we send her back? Should we go to court, the police, or the National Human Rights Commission?

You can file a complaint with the police under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cruelty by husband and in-laws, and seek a protection order under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. You can also approach a local women’s helpline or legal aid organization for assistance.
