Being a 45-year-old government employee, I’m facing a challenging situation. How can I legally:
1. Free myself from the obligations imposed by the Maintenance of Parents Act, given I haven’t received any financial or other support from them since becoming an adult?
2. Prevent my parents and their acquaintances from contacting me?
3. Formally declare that I have no claim on their property under the inheritance laws?

Under Indian law, you cannot legally disown your parents or completely sever ties. You may have an obligation to provide maintenance under the Maintenance of Parents Act. You cannot prevent your parents from contacting you, but you can legally limit their access through a court order if they are harassing you. Renouncing inheritance rights can be done through a legal document, but it doesn’t relieve you of your parental obligations.
