We’re planning a grand wedding celebration in Kolkata on February 17th, but would love to get our marriage registered a few days earlier on February 14th to expedite the certificate process. We’ll be leaving Kolkata just two days after the wedding. Our registrar says the official date on the certificate will be the 14th as that’s when we sign. Is there any way to have the certificate reflect our wedding date of the 17th? We’d really appreciate it if the certificate matched our special day.

Under Indian law, the marriage certificate will reflect the date you sign the registration document, which in your case would be February 14th. While you can celebrate your wedding on February 17th, it’s not possible to alter the registration date to match the celebration date. You can, however, include a statement in the registration document indicating the date of your wedding ceremony.
