My name is different on my 10th and 12th mark sheets, and it’s also different on my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. I recently got my name legally changed in the gazette to match the one on my UG/PG certificates.
Some people say I should have gotten an affidavit and published the change in a newspaper before going to the gazette office. I directly applied to the gazette office without those steps. Since I’m preparing for government exams, I need to know:
1. Do I need to get an affidavit and publish the name change in a newspaper besides the gazette change?
2. Is changing my name from the one on my 10th/12th certificates to the one on my UG/PG certificates the correct way to do it?

In India, legal name change through the gazette notification is the primary and legally accepted process. An affidavit and newspaper publication are not mandatory before approaching the gazette office. However, providing supporting documents, including your educational certificates, strengthens your application.
