My husband and I got married in December 2014 in Bhopal and registered our marriage with the Bhopal Municipal Corporation. On the marriage certificate, my surname was changed to his. I’d like to keep my maiden name on all my documents like my company ID card, PAN card, and passport. Is there any way I can change my name back to my maiden name on the marriage certificate itself? I’d really prefer to avoid changing my name on all my documents.

In India, you can’t change your name on the marriage certificate after it’s been registered. You can, however, apply for a name change affidavit, which you can then use to update your other documents. The affidavit must be attested by a notary public or a magistrate.
