My wife and I got married in 2002 under the Hindu Marriage Act. We have two children, a 9-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter. Since our wedding, she has been a stay-at-home mother and we’ve travelled together, even living abroad for a while. However, she can’t get along with my family, especially my parents and sister. She feels they’re influencing my decisions, even though that’s not true. She constantly demands respect but treats my family poorly, expecting me to prioritize her family over mine. If I try to maintain a normal relationship with my extended family, she becomes unpredictable, even threatening legal action. Her mother and relatives are fueling this tension, prompting her to act in certain ways. I’ve tried to adjust for years, but it’s taking a toll on my health and my children. As a last resort, I’m considering legal separation. What legal steps should I take to proceed?

You should first attempt to resolve the issues through counseling or mediation. If that fails, you can file for divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act, citing cruelty or incompatibility. You can also seek temporary custody arrangements for your children, as well as financial support.
