My husband was already married when we got married in a church. My family doesn’t know about his first wife, who is illiterate. They found out later, and are worried she might take legal action. They initially tried to stop the marriage, even filing a complaint with the police. However, my husband and I are determined to continue our relationship. He’s not interested in going back to his first wife, but she keeps harassing my family and me with phone calls. He lives in Hyderabad, and we’re both working professionals. What legal options does his first wife have?

Under Indian law, your husband’s first marriage is legally valid. His second marriage to you is void under the Hindu Marriage Act, as he was already married. His first wife can file a criminal complaint for bigamy against him, and a civil suit for divorce and alimony. She could also seek legal action against you for interfering with her marriage.
