My husband has filed for divorce in the family court, and I’m not ready to give up on our marriage. My lawyer suggests trying mediation. How long can mediation last? What happens if we can’t reach an agreement? Will the divorce be granted automatically if mediation fails? I understand that since I don’t want a divorce, it shouldn’t be granted just because mediation fails. We should still be able to go to court to resolve the matter.

In India, there’s no fixed time limit for mediation. If you and your husband can’t reach an agreement during mediation, the process ends. This doesn’t automatically grant a divorce; the court will proceed with the divorce case based on the evidence presented and the arguments made by both parties.
