My husband and I married in 2005 and had a baby boy. After I recovered at my mother’s place, my husband promised to take me home after two weeks. But his family, especially his brother-in-law, didn’t want us together because they wanted control of the family property. When I tried to go home, my husband and his parents vanished without a word. I filed a police complaint and he returned after two months, only to say he wanted a divorce. He claims he’s been disowned and can’t afford alimony, even though he has many assets and a thriving business. What can I do?

You can file a divorce petition citing cruelty and desertion, and seek alimony. You can also seek custody of your son and a share of your husband’s property, including his business assets, as per the Hindu Marriage Act and the Indian Succession Act. You should consult a lawyer to pursue your legal options effectively.
