My brother-in-law married another woman in an Arya Samaj ceremony in Calicut on June 11th, 2006, without divorcing his first wife. We know this is true but don’t have the marriage certificate from the Arya Samaj. He’s currently living with the second wife and has filed for divorce from his first wife, but the case is still ongoing. What should we do about this situation? How can we get a copy of the marriage certificate from the Arya Samaj? Would a Right to Information (RTI) request be helpful?

Your brother-in-law’s second marriage is considered bigamous and illegal under Indian law. You can approach the Arya Samaj temple in Calicut directly to request a copy of the marriage certificate. An RTI request might be helpful, but the Arya Samaj may have their own internal procedures for releasing such information.
