My lawyer suggested filing an FIR for online fraud. Money was stolen from my Airtel Money, SBI Buddy, and IDEA Money accounts. He said these companies would refund the money once the FIR is filed. However, the police refuse to file an FIR, saying they don’t know who to file it against. How can I get them to file the FIR?

In India, the police are obligated to register an FIR if you provide them with a cognisable offence, which online fraud constitutes. You can request a written refusal from the police, then appeal to a higher authority, like the Superintendent of Police or the Deputy Inspector General of Police, citing the legal basis for registering the FIR. If they still refuse, you can approach the court for legal recourse.
