I joined a gym in Gurgaon that has a one-month notice period for cancelling membership. In mid-February, due to health problems, I couldn’t go to the gym and decided to stop my membership. I emailed them on March 3rd to cancel, but the email bounced and they only received it on March 7th – a week late according to their policy. I’ve already paid for February and March, but they’re demanding I pay for April as well, which would be two months’ notice. I refused to pay for April, and now they’re saying they won’t cancel my membership and are harassing me.

Under Indian law, a gym cannot enforce a notice period that is unreasonable. The gym’s one-month notice period is likely valid, but they are unreasonable in demanding payment for April as you had already informed them in March. You are not obligated to pay for April and can pursue a legal remedy if they continue harassing you.
