Our young company brought in a consultant, giving him clear tasks to handle. We discussed a contract with him, but never signed it. He worked intermittently for half a year, but didn’t complete most of what we’d asked. We had to let him go. Now he’s claiming we owe him six months’ worth of payment based on the unsigned contract. Should we pay him? Can he take legal action against us?

Indian law generally requires a written contract for enforceable agreements. Since the contract was unsigned, it’s likely not legally binding. However, he might argue for implied contract based on his work. It’s best to consult a lawyer to assess your legal position and potential liability.
