My brother and I registered a property deed in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal back in 1994. I’m worried, because he could potentially register the same property again after 1994, changing the terms in his favor, without my knowledge. He could even try to cancel the original deed. I have mobility issues and can’t easily get around, so this makes me anxious. Could you advise me on what I can do to protect my rights?

You should register a caveat against the property in the concerned Sub-Registrar’s office in Sonarpur. A caveat prevents any transaction on the property without your knowledge and consent. You should also consult with a lawyer to explore other options to further secure your interest in the property.
