I gave a cheque as security in 2015 and paid the amount in cash. However, the person presented the cheque and it bounced. I stopped payment on the cheque before it bounced. No case was filed for two years, but a police officer has been calling me for the past five days demanding I visit the police station, threatening an FIR if I don’t. The cheque bounced in a different district. Can they file an FIR after two years? Should I go to the police station?

Under Indian law, a complaint regarding a bounced cheque must be filed within 30 days of the cheque being presented for payment. Since more than two years have passed, filing an FIR now is legally barred. You are not obligated to go to the police station, but it’s advisable to consult a lawyer to understand your legal options and address the police officer’s demands.
